Bryan Reimer Is Guest on UX Soup Podcast
by Adam Felts
AgeLab Research Scientist Bryan Reimer spoke about his research on driver interactions with new vehicle technologies for UX Soup, a short-form podcast that discusses the latest developments impacting the user experience across personal devices, automobiles, and the smart home.
In introducing himself for the podcast, Dr. Reimer highlighted about the uneven results of designers’ and engineers’ efforts to increase the safety of drivers through the implementation of advanced technologies in vehicles. He attributes these difficulties in achieving success to a divergence between how designers imagine that users will interact with the technologies and how drivers actually use them. “There is a disconnect between the specifications of what engineers design and the utilization of the technology in the real world … only by understanding that disconnect … can technology players ensure that they’re designing cohesively.” He went on to say say that the key to designing effective vehicle technologies is to consult real-world data on how users interact with the technology, and to develop regulations that are informed by that knowledge.
